Short Game Facilities

A Synthetic Surface for Any Course or Club

Artificial grass is transforming golf facilities across the UK, with more clubs, courses, and leisure resorts investing in synthetic golf greens for practice areas, putting greens, and driving ranges. Artificial grass greens offer a premium feel and authentic appearance that appeals to both PGA Professionals and amateur golfers, delivering consistent performance and durability year-round, regardless of the weather. Unlike traditional grass practice areas, synthetic greens eliminate high maintenance costs and time, providing an economical and reliable solution. Active Golf Projects specialises in bespoke artificial golf green installation for clubs and courses.

How do you build a golf green?

Our putting green construction starts with excavating the current surface to a set depth, allowing space for a stable, porous foundation. We lay down layers of Type 1 stone and granite dust, creating a permeable base that is leveled and contoured for natural golf breaks. Once compacted, synthetic turf is shaped and installed, followed by a final sand infill.

Scroll through our timeline below to see each of these four steps broken down in more detail.

The Process

Ground Excavation

We start by excavating the existing ground to a specific depth. This prepares the area for a stable foundation and ensures the green’s drainage and longevity. The cleared space is ready for a fresh, porous base.

Base Preparation

Next, we install layers of aggregate materials, such as Type 1 stone and granite dust. These materials create a permeable base that allows for water drainage while providing a solid surface. This base is leveled and compacted, forming the foundation of the green.

Grass Installation

Once the base is prepared, we shape and contour it to create realistic golf breaks and slopes. This process allows for a challenging and authentic golfing experience, as we design contours that mimic natural golf course greens.

Finishing Touches

Finally, we cut and place the synthetic turf, shaping it precisely to fit the layout of the green. A layer of sand infill is added to secure the turf and enhance its durability, creating a finished surface ready for play.

Artificial Golf Green FAQ

Can I hit golf shots from a distance?

Yes — our greens are designed to handle realistic wedge play from distance.
You can comfortably hit chips, pitches, and controlled approach shots depending on your available space. The turf, base, and cup system are engineered to absorb impact and replicate the feel of a real golf green, so you can practise anything from short chips to longer wedge shots with confidence.

What types of shot can be practiced?

You can practice every key short-game shot, including:
• Chipping from fringe or rough
• Pitching from short to mid-range distances
• Bump-and-run shots
• Flop shots (space permitting)
• Putting on a true-rolling green
• Distance control wedges into designated chipping areas
Our greens are designed to give your facility a full short-game practice experience.

Will the ball roll like it does on a real course?

Premium artificial surfaces are engineered to mimic natural green speeds, usually between 9–11 on the Stimpmeter.

Are artificial greens weather resistant?

Our artificial golf greens are designed to be all-weather and drain quickly, allowing practice shortly after rain.

What size space do I need for a short game green?

Most homes and clubs can fit a custom short-game green because the size is fully flexible. As a guide:
• Small areas: 4m × 3m and up — ideal for putting and short chips
• Medium areas: 6m × 4m — allows putting, chipping, and small pitching areas
• Large areas: 8m × 5m or more — plenty of space for multi-hole layouts and longer wedge shots
Because every green is different, we design it around your available space, ensuring you get the best performance and layout possible. If you have measurements, we can recommend the perfect size.

What maintenance is required?

Very little.

Typical care includes:

• Occasional brushing
• Debris removal
• Light infill top-ups every 1–2 years
• Weed and moss killer 3-4 times a year
