How do you install a home putting green?

Our artificial golf green construction starts with excavating the current surface to a set depth, allowing space for a stable, porous foundation. We lay down layers of Type 1 stone and granite dust, creating a permeable base that is levelled and contoured for natural golf breaks. Once compacted, professional artificial golf grass is shaped and installed, followed by a final sand infill.

Scroll through our timeline below to see each of these four steps broken down in more detail.

The Process

Ground Excavation

We start by excavating the existing ground to a specific depth. This prepares the area for a stable foundation and ensures excellent drainage and longevity for the golf green. The cleared space is ready for a fresh, porous base.

Base Preparation

Next, we install layers of aggregate materials, such as Type 1 stone and granite dust. These materials create a permeable base that allows for water drainage while providing a solid surface. This base is leveled and compacted, forming the foundation of the putting green.

Grass Installation

Once the base is prepared, we shape and contour it to create a realistic golf green with breaks and slopes. We design contours that mimic natural golf course greens, creating a challenging and authentic golfing experience.

Finishing Touches

Finally, we cut and place the synthetic turf, shaping it precisely to fit the layout of the green. A layer of sand infill is added to secure the turf and enhance its durability, creating a finished surface ready for play.

Artificial Putting Green FAQ

How much does it cost to install an outdoor putting green?

The cost of an outdoor putting green depends on the size, design, and type of artificial grass is required, as we have different grasses for different solutions. On average, putting greens are in the region of £150 per m2 fully supplied and installed. We’ll provide a custom quote after reviewing your space and design preferences.

How is a putting green installed?

Installation starts with site preparation which consists of clearing and levelling existing surface. Excavating any bunker or drainage work that is required and shaping for base formation. We then install a geotextile membrane to the area for a weed preventative and soil separation. An aggregate subbase is applied to the area which is levelled and compacted. To create the contours and levels required to create the structure of green. We then install a granite dust aggregate which is compacted to provide a smooth finish ready for the artificial grass. The final step is to roll the green, and install the artificial grass, both fringe grasses and putting surfaces are cut joined and clued. Finally, the green is infilled with a sand and brushed ready for use.

Can I choose the type of surface on my golf green?

Absolutely! We offer several high-quality artificial golf grass options designed specifically for golf greens. You can choose your preferred texture, colour, and ball roll speed to match your playing style and aesthetic preferences.

How big can my putting green be?

Your putting green can be as small or as large as your space allows. From compact backyard greens to expansive multi-hole designs, we customize every project to fit your space and your goals for practice or recreation.

Does an artificial putting green require maintenance?

Yes, but it’s minimal compared to natural grass. Occasional brushing, debris removal, weed and moss killer and light infill top-ups will keep your artificial putting green looking and performing its best. We’ll also provide a maintenance guide after installation.

Can I add features like sand traps or chipping areas?

Definitely! We can design your golf green with bunkers, fringe turf, chipping zones, or contour slopes to make it more challenging and realistic. Every project is fully customisable to match your vision and skill level.
